Are You Prepared? National Preparedness Month 2015

Every September, encourages people to get prepared for any number of emergencies. This September, the slogan for National Preparedness Month is “Don’t Wait. Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today.”  There are four kinds of disasters encourages communities to be prepared for this month:

  • Floods
  • Wildfire
  • Hurricane
  • Power Outages

In order to be better prepared for these  disasters, National Preparedness Month encourages you to be informed, make a plan and build a disaster supply kit. They also supply a number of ways to get involved in community preparedness.

Here are some tips from Guardian for participating in National Preparedness Month as a family this year.

  1. Spend time as a family learning about the disasters for which you are at greatest risk. Don’t assume that children will learn all this in school.
  2. Make a written plan and practice it together. Children can practice leading the family in the plan so it sticks in their memories.
  3. Create the disaster supply kit together giving kids the time to explore everything that’s going into it. Older children can even be made responsible for aspects of maintaining the kits and making sure they’re well stocked.
  4. Visit for more resources and games that help make the whole family excited to get prepared!
